DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) | What is DHCP | DHCP Port

DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is a protocol that is used to provide automatic IP address to the connected devices or computers in a network. If you have a large company or network where you have lots or computers or devices then DHCP is very important in this case as its very hard to configure an IP address on every computer one by one.

Using DHCP computers receives an automatic IP address from the configured DHCP server.

DHCP can be configured on Windows Server, Routers, and switches as well.

Benefits of DHCP Configuration in a network

1. Reliability - When DHCP is configured in a network computers can automatic obtain an IP address from the server. If there is new computer added in a network that will automatic receive an IP address from the DHCP server.

2. Reduced Network Administration - DHCP provides and automatic
IP address to the network connected computers so there is no need to configure an IP address manually on every computer one by one.

DHCP Ports

DHCP use UDP port 67 and 68 in most of the client server configurations. UDP port 67 is used by the DHCP server and UDP port 68 is used by the  DHCP client.
